Q: What side of the road should I drive on?

A: Cars drive on the right and pass on the left.

Q: What is the speed limit?

A: Speed limits are generally 100-120km/ph on motorways, 60km/ph in built-up areas and 40km/ph in residential streets.

Q: What is the drink-drive limit in the UAE?

A: Drinking is strictly prohibited – a blood alcohol level any higher than 0 could result in a fine of up to $5,000, deportation or prison.

Q: Can I use my phone while driving?

A: No. It is strictly prohibited to use your mobile while driving.

Q: Where can I park?

A: Most of Dubai’s malls offer free parking but in most other locations you should expect to pay, either with cash, card or by SMS from your phone.

Q: Do I need a child seat for my kids?

A:  Children between four and eight years old must sit in a booster seat – which can be hired with many rental cars - and children younger than 13 cannot travel in the passenger seat.

Q: Can I drive into the desert?

A: Travellers hoping to visit the desert are usually advised to book onto a guided 4X4 tour. While it’s possible to self-drive to the edge of the desert, you should never attempt to drive across the sand.
